Reflexology Colleges

Author: Michael Bustamante
Prospective students who are intrigued by the extraordinary, and looking for an academic challenge, may be interested in enrolling in one of a number of reflexology colleges. Once enrolled, students of reflexology colleges will learn about an alternative therapy known as reflexology, which is based on energy healing concepts.

Reflexology colleges may be considered novel by some conventional medicine advocates, but if you learn about this ancient healing art, you may be quite surprised at what you will find. Some of the earliest practices of reflexology have been discovered to have been used as far back as 2,500 B.C. Furthermore, students attending reflexology colleges will also gain unique insight and history into how Native Americans have practiced hand reflexology for several centuries. On a related note, did you know that President John Garfield used this form of healing art to treat his pain syndrome? [1]

In general, reflexology colleges train students in this variety of massage and touch therapy, applying it to the hand or foot reflexes to eliminate energy blocks. The theory behind this energy healing method is that once energy channels are opened to flow without restraint, the body is able to return to a natural state of balance. Thus, self-healing is allowed to occur.

Some of the many reflexology techniques that may be learned in reflexology colleges may include "thumb walking," "butterfly," "karate chops," "tapping," "knuckle press," "clapping," and "feathering" - to name just a few terms that you may encounter while participating in this distinctive course. Because it is a holistic therapy, reflexology colleges carefully instruct their students how to effectively alleviate stress and tension through applied knowledge and therapies. In doing so, future reflexologists must be comprehensively acquainted with the anatomy of reflexology zones and how they correspond to various body parts.

Typically, reflexology colleges offer in-house training, as well as distance learning courses for students who are on the go. Much of the curriculum will be comprised of the history and theory of reflexology, body zones, foot and hand examination, reflexology techniques, anatomy, physiology (skeletal systems, muscular systems, etc.), and practical business practices. While hands-on training is always beneficial, there are many professional massage therapists, holistic practitioners, and other alternative medicine and healthcare providers who choose to take continuing education courses through reflexology colleges in order to further their professional outlook. Accordingly, most reflexology colleges will extend opportunities to earn certificates or diplomas upon successful course completion.
