Learning French-Some Helpful Hints

Have you started learning French? or Do you want to learn it?
Here are some useful hints for being successful.

1. Practice speaking out loud. This is very important in any language but especially with French since pronunciation can be difficult.
2. Get some tapes and listen to them or find sound files online and listen.
3. Read in French, then read some more French. Reading in French will increase your vocabulary and you will be surprised how much you will learn.
4. There is an abundance of learning material online so do a search and see what you can find.
5. Get some Disney and other popular DVD's from the library and watch the French versions. Most DVD's have these and it can help immensely.
6. Learn popular French folksongs. You can find the words and music to these online.
7. Practice with someone. You can find a pen pal online or you can visit your local chapter of the Alliance Francaise or you can probably find someone at your local university or community college who would love to practice with you.
8. Study a lit bit every day. This is essential if you want to be successful.
9. Realize that it will take time for your success to come but it will come if you persist and set goals to make it happen.
10. Focus on thinking in French. It can be difficult at first but it can be done.
11. Learn the grammar but don't dwell on it. Get a basic grammar book and study it thoroughly and then use what you have learned without becoming obsessed with perfection.
12. Watch the French in Action program on your local public broadcasting station.
13. Get yourself to France or another French speaking country for at least a few months. Make an effort to speak only in French while you are there.
