How to Sanitize your Water Filters Safetly

Author: Kenji Matsuhara

Some disinfectant in the market is suitable for the sanitization of water filtration reverse osmosis membranes and their associated distribution systems. But some disinfectants may not totally eliminate all vegetative microorgansims in the reverse osmosis RO membranes and their associated piping systems due to their construction and assembly, but can relied upon to reduce the number ofmicroorgansims to acceptable levels when used as directed. the possibility of recontamination by the incoimg water supply may also exist.

The RO manufacturuer should be consulted prior to the use of the disinfectant. It is necesary to determine the temperature and PH range accepatble for that particular membranes. Because of the variations in materials of construction at different facilities, some systems may have components of pumps, gasket, etc that are not compatible with long term exposure to this disinfectant solutions. This disinfectant solutions may be corrosive to copper, brass, iron, and certain other metals.

Because of the individuality of the RO water system in design and constructions, as well as the quality of raw water, all RO systems do not contain the same components. Dependent on the system, all or portions of the following procedure may be for sanitizing.

1. Biological or organic fouling of the membrane or other parts of the system should be removed with the appropriate cleaner. It is important to follow the membrane manufaturer's recommendation cleaning procedure. After cleanig, flsuh the sytem with RO permeate.
2. Mineral deposits should be removed with acidic cleaner prior to snaitization of the membrane. Again follow the membrane manufacturer's recommendation cleaning procedure. Then flush the unit with RO permeate. The presence of iron or other metals, in conjuction with hydrogen peroxide could cause membrane degration.
3. Prepare the disinfection according to the supplier's recommendations. Fill the entire water circuit to be sanitize with the diluted disinfectant and allow the diluted solution to reach a minimum temperature of 20degree. Need to be careful not to exceed the membrane recommended temperature.
4. Recirculate the system.
5. Rinse the RO system and check for residual chemical by following directions on the PH test strips. Rinse time will vary depending on the size of RO system.

Proper sanitizing our water RO filters ensure safe water for drinking.
