Depression And Diabetics

Author: Stephen White
Diabetics in and of itself can be quite a source of stress. People who have been diagnosed with the disorder has depression because of poor glucose control. If you want to manage the stresses in your life as they relate to diabetes, you need to start somewhere.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is characterized by loss of the insulin-producing beta cells of the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas. Sensitivity and responsiveness to insulin are usually normal, especially in the early stages. This type comprises up to 10% of total cases in North America and Europe, though this varies by geographical location. This type of diabetes can affect children or adults, but has traditionally been termed "juvenile diabetes" because it represents a majority of cases of diabetes affecting children. The most common cause of beta cell loss leading to type 1 diabetes is autoimmune destruction, accompanied by antibodies directed against insulin and islet cell proteins. The principal treatment of type 1 diabetes, even from the earliest stages, is replacement of insulin. Without insulin, ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis can develop.

You might be sad to know that some of the things you enjoyed eating, and some of the activities you enjoyed doing, you can no longer eat or do. Many people with diabetes have to check their sugar everyday by a drop of blood. Things like lack of control and changing a persons life is a reason why depression happens to some people. They begin to feel trapped in their own body. People who have diabetes and depression have a higher risk of death that of that with those who have just depression.

When it comes to disorders or diseases that effect the rest of a persons life like diabetes, the person will go through a grief period. This doesnt turn into depression until the person becomes overwhelmed with anger or denial. If you notice that someone near and dear to you has been diagnosed with diabetes month ago and still seem mourning, you should bring their depression to the attention of their doctor.

Be sure to talk to a family member if you want to deal with these issues properly. Diabetes doesnt have to be life-threaten and by talking about their insecurities they will feel better about the diagnose and their depression could disappear once they realize they can live with it. Living with diabetes has never been easier in this day and age.
