The Shrewdness of Catalina Wanka
[Dedicated to the folks in San Jernimo; and their Mayor]

Advance: It is not my intention to recount the history of the long and weary campaign of the Spanish vs. the Inca Empire, but to summarize the swift and shrewdness of Catalina Wanka, in the following lines; in this sketch that is, if in deed, I may call it that; for the reader will find out, Pizarro's power over Peru during this period of time during the 16th Century, did not persuade Catalina to give up her gold; although it got the head of the Inca King's.

By the mountains surrounding San Jernimo, Peru [by Huancayo], in the Mantaro Valley, Catalina Wanka had stopped her caravan of llamas carrying her contribution of gold to the Inca King, in Cajamarca; the amount was immense. It would be used to buy the freedom of Atahualpa, the Inca King of Peru, whom had promised his captors a room full of Gold. The caravan stood waiting.

Hernando de Soto, and Riquelme, were playing chess in the early afternoon in Cajamarca, in a room being used to incarcerate the Inca king (as he was being held for ransom). Across the shoulder of Soto, Atahualpa stood: said he, in a whisper "No...the rook!"? He had studied the game of chess quite closely these past several months while in captivity, and surprised the few that stood by watching the chess game, as well as surprising the players likewise. As history has recorded, Soto took the Inca king's advice and won the game.

When it came time to vote to let the king live or execute him, it was Riquelme who was the deciding vote that brought the king to his death. Thus, my poem should suite the occasion:

Atahualpa's Game

Sometimes, it's not wise
To share your wisdom
" ?as did, Atahualpa
(The Inca King) in the
Game of chess; thereafter,
He was condemned to death.

" ?"Oh!"? said Catalina Wanka in grief, still in the Mantaro Valley, beyond the Andes, having just heard of the execution of the king. Thus, bewildered, and downtrodden, she walked back and forth in the little village of San Jernimo, and mumbled painstakingly, "I have got to hide my gold, for it must not be given to the Spaniards."? Oh, no, oh no, she surmised, this could not happen. One might say at this point of the game: why couldn't the Spaniards have waited until the gold arrived, than kill the king, but as you can see, pride comes before destruction, and thus, the Spanish government of the day lost its golden apple.

In any case, it was in the dark of the night, Catalina carrying a lantern, found a location on her property to hide her gold, within the makings of an ancient cavern was discovered, which was decaying; here then, she planted her gold among its roots" ?hid it deep within its vaults, and swiftly covered the opening up before daybreak. These tunnels which held many vaults, were connecting" ?that is to say, they transverses South America two-thousand miles, from where she put the gold, to the coast of Brazil, to the Gate of the Sun, at Tiwanaku, all the way back to Macho Picchu, and under the mountains of the Andes.

The Treasure of Catalina Wanka

There, by the lofty mountains fair
Hidden under the earth by Huancayo
In San Jernimo de Tunan" ?
Is Catalina's treasure of gold!

Whereupon, the Spaniards killed
Atahualpa, the Inca King" ?;
Hence, Catalina turned around to seek
And found-her new, sacred ground! ...

And, a glutted steam swept-
This little adobe church
Called San Sebastian-ever since
In the lofty mountains by Huancayo! ...

Thereafter, an adobe church was built on that spot, now called, Saint Sebastian. A ruins that is most beautiful, in its mixed shaded brownish brick adobe colors that sits against the victorious hills beyond its walls in this little village called San Jernimo that is nestled within.

La Habilidad de Catalina Wanka
[ Dedicado a la gente de San Jernimo, y su Alcalde]

Avance: No es mi intencin relatar la historia de la campaa larga y cansada de los espaoles contra el Imperio inca, pero para resumir rpidamente la habilidad de Catalina Wanka, en las lneas siguientes; en este bosquejo es decir si en el caso, puedo llamarlo as que el lector averiguar, el poder de Pizarro sobre El Per durante este perodo del siglo XVI, no consigui el oro de Catalina sin embargo este consigui la cabeza del Rey inca.

Por las montaas que rodean San Jernimo, Per [por Huancayo], en el Valle del Mantaro, Catalina Wanka haba parado su caravana de llamas llevando su contribucin de oro a Cajamarca; la cantidad era inmensa. Esto sera usado para comprar la libertad de Atahualpa, El Rey Inca de Per, quien haba prometido a sus captores un cuarto lleno de Oro. La caravana permanecio esperando.

Hernando de Soto, y Riquelme, jugaban al ajedrez a primera hora de la tarde en Cajamarca, en un espacio del cuarto siendo usado para encarcelar al rey inca (como l estaba siendo detenido para el rescate). A travs del hombro de Soto, Atahualpa parado, le dijo en un susurro " No... el rook! " l haba estudiado el juego de ajedrez casi de cerca en estos varios meses pasados mientras estaba en cautiverio, y haba sorprendido a los pocos que apoyaron mirando el juego de ajedrez, as como sorprendi a los jugadores, de la misma manera. Como la historia ha registrado, Soto tom los consejos del Rey inca, y gan el juego.

Cuando vino el tiempo para votar, si dejar al rey vivir o ejecutarlo, fu Riquelme quien tuvo el voto que decidio y trajo al Rey a su muerte. As, viene mi poema, que debera la suite, la ocasin:

El Juego de Atahualpa

A veces, no es sabio
Compartir su sabidura
- como hizo, Atahualpa
( El Rey inca) en el
Juego de ajedrez; a partir de entonces,
l fue condenado a la muerte.

- " Ah! " dijo Catalina Wanka en la pena, todava en el Valle Mantaro, ms all de Andes, enseguida que hubo odo de la ejecucin del rey. As, desconcertada, y oprimida, ella anduvo hacia adelante y hacia atrs en el pequeo pueblo de San Jernimo y mascull minuciosamente, " debo ocultar mi oro, ya que ello no ser dado a los espaoles. " Ah, no, ah no, ella conjetur, esto no poda pasar. Uno podra decir en este punto del juego: por qu no podran los espaoles haber esperado hasta que el oro llegara, que matar al Rey, pero como usted puede ver, el orgullo viene antes de la destruccin, y as, el gobierno espaol del da perdi su manzana de oro.

En cualquier caso, era en la oscuridad de la noche, Catalina llevando una linterna, encontr una ubicacin sobre su propiedad para ocultar su oro, dentro de las dotes de una caverna antigua que fue descubierta, la cual se descompona; aqu entonces, ella plant su oro entre lo ocult de races profundamente dentro de sus bvedas, y rpidamente cubri la apertura antes del amanecer. Estos tneles que sostuvieron muchas bvedas, fueron conectadas que es decir, ellos Sudamrica transversal dos mil millas, de donde ella puso el oro, a la costa de Brasil, a la Puerta del Sol, en Tiahuanaco, todo el camino regresando a Macchu Picchu, y bajo las montaas de Andes.

El Tesoro de Catalina Wanka

All, por la exposicin de montaas altas
Ocultado bajo la tierra por Huancayo
En San Jernimo de Tunan-
Esta el tesoro de oro de Catalina!
Por lo cual, los espaoles mataron a
Atahualpa, el Rey inca-;
De ah, Catalina gir para buscar
Y encontrando - su tierra nueva, sagrada! ...
Y, un vapor saciado barri
Esta pequea iglesia de adobe

llamado San Sebastin - desde entonces
En las montaas altas por Huancayo! ...

A partir de entonces, una iglesia de adobe fue construida en aquel punto, ahora llamado, San Sebastian. Las ruinas que son las ms hermosas, en sus colores de adobe y ladrillo surtidos parduzcos protegidos del sol que sientan contra las colinas victoriosas ms all de sus paredes en este pequeo pueblo llamado San Jernimo que estan recostadas dentro.
