A Power Wheel Chair Can Offer Freedom and Added Mobility

Author: Allan Wilson

People who have a limited amount of strength in their arms and upper body usually purchase a power wheel chair. For this reason, they need to use an alternate source of power to get themselves around. This wheel chair can offer a welcome amount of freedom and added mobility to the handicapped person. Imagine always having to yell for someone to push you where you need to go. Maybe you don't have to "imagine" this at all. Maybe this is already your daily routine! Well, this wheel chair may be the answer for you!

A low-end power wheel chair will commonly have a light weight frame that is suited for indoor use. If you are just getting started or don't plan to use the chair alot, then it's not a bad idea. The frames, however, are not always the best. They can sometimes crack and need to be repalced. Also, the low end models have front forks that sometimes bend and the motor can often wear out before you have even gotten your full and fair value for your money. The higher priced chair is usually more rugged and dependable. It will have a frame that is designed to handle alot more weight and will therefore resist breakage. Some newer models also have a spring suspension. This will allow a more smooth ride over rugged terrain and will make for a longer lasting purchase.

Some of the common power wheel chair features are a rigid seat design or what is known as a "sling seat". You are going to need some special considerations for the seat to account for the pressure sores that can be acquired. There will be some kind of specialized cushion that can accommodate long periods of sitting. The battery on the power wheel chair is usually rechargeable and there will be a motor that is built into the construction of the chair. The motor will operate either a gear system or a belt system and the belt system is often preferable because of the quiet sound. Armrests and footplates are also very common features on this kind of chair. Whatever you decide upon, take your time and shop around. Make sure and find the best power wheel chair for you so that you will be the most comfortable you can be!
